Secret of Dead is another volatile ancient Egypt installment in the Play’n Go ‘book slot’ range, and it plays out on 6x3 reels with 10 paylines. Aside from the added 6th reel, which deviates from the standard ‘Book of’ formula, you also get a new randomly chosen expanding symbol per bonus round retrigger. In addition, the top-tier Shai symbol is worth 2x as much if expanding, which can lead to single spin payouts up to the capped 10,000x max win. Check our full review below the free demo game.

Secret of Dead Review
It certainly feels like a lot more because of all the Book of copycats out there, but Play’n Go themselves haven’t - as far as we can gather - released more than 12 ‘Book of’ mechanic slots, including this one. If you’re looking for something revolutionary, Secret of Dead is not it. This release basically combines elements from 2 previous Play’n Go installments, namely Scroll of Dead and Legacy of Dead.
You get a 6th reel bolted on in all stages of the game this time, not only in the bonus round, but you’re still dealing with 10 paylines. As in Legacy of Dead, each bonus round retrigger gives you another chosen expanding symbol. However, the top-tier Shai (Egyptian goddess of fate) symbol is worth 2x as much in the bonus round, leaving you with a solid 10,000x single spin potential (which also happens to be the game’s win cap).

The royal symbols pay up to 25x your stake for 6 of a kind wins, while the premiums pay between 100 and 500 x your stake for the same. The Ankh symbol replaces the usual Book symbol, and it serves double duty as both wild and scatter. As a wild, the Ankh steps in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combos, and it holds no value of its own.

Landing 3, 4, 5 or 6 Ankh scatters at the same time awards a scatter win of 1x, 10x, 50x or 250x your stake, respectively, and it also triggers the Bonus Round with 8, 10, 12 or 15 free spins, respectively.
A pay symbol is selected randomly before the free spins start, and it becomes the special Expanding Symbol during the feature. The Expanding Symbol pays like a scatter symbol, meaning that you only need to land enough instances anywhere for all instances to expand and give you a corresponding full-reels payout. The expanding symbol doesn't need to land adjacent in other words, and it expands and pays after the regular win calculation has been summed up.
You win +5 extra spins when you land 3+ scatters anywhere in view during the bonus round, and you also get an additional randomly chosen Expanding Symbol added to the mix. It’s thus possible to turn up to all 9 pay symbols into special expanding scatter pay symbols. The top-tier Shai symbol (egyptian lady Fortuna) pays double if expanding.
The gamble feature can be chosen after any win, including the total win from the bonus round, and it’s a classic card color/suit guessing double/quadruple or nothing game. You can gamble your winnings up to 5 times in a row, or up to 2,500x your stake at the most.
The 200 Spins Secret of Dead Slot Experience
You get to see a few smaller wins, and a bonus round teaser, before the feature finally triggers close to the 1-minute mark.
We got the minimum of 8 free spins, and ‘10’ was chosen as our special expanding symbol. We came close to filling the screen a few times, and we also took our chances in the gamble feature afterwards. Check it all out by hitting the play button below.Review Summary
doesn’t take much of a tweak to merit a brand new ‘Book slot’ release these days, not even from the inventors of the infamous Book of Dead themselves. Play'n Go has basically incorporated the 6th bonus round reel from the previous Scroll of Dead also into the base game in this installment, and in addition, Secret of Dead gives you the extra expanding symbol per bonus round retrigger that was first seen in Legacy of Dead.
We’re getting a bit tired of the ancient Egypt theme at this point, and we wouldn’t mind a brand new and more experimental direction for this series. We understand that Play’n Go can easily milk it for all its worth by doing what they are doing though, and connoisseurs will probably not mind yet another variant. The 10,000x potential, which is twice the usual ‘Book’ max win, makes this a somewhat tempting prospect for all players, but there are more exciting Ra clones out there in our humble opinion.
Pros
- 6 reels in all stages of the game
- FS w/ additional expanding symbol per retrigger
- Top-tier Shai symbol pays double if expanding
- Win up to 10,000x your stake from a single spin
Cons
- Beware of adjustable RTP ranges
- The ancient Egypt theme is getting old
- Nothing really new to see here
If you enjoy Secret of Dead Slot you should also try:
Scroll of Dead - is the previous Play’n Go installment in their popular ‘book of’ mechanic range, and you get the standard 5x3 reels with 10 paylines in the base game. The bonus round comes with a 6th reel though, as well as a randomly chosen expanding symbol. This gives you a 7,500x single spin potential during the feature.
Legacy of Dead - is Play’n Go’s highly popular follow-up to their iconic Book of Dead, and the big twist is that you get a new randomly chosen expanding symbol per bonus round retrigger.
Up to all 9 pay symbols can thus become expanding scatter pay symbols, and the max win is the standard 5,000x your stake.Ghost of Dead - is another installment in Play’n Go’s ongoing ‘Book slot’ series, and you get random base game Ghost Spins that come with a chosen expanding symbol. You can choose 1 of 3 random expanding symbols when the bonus round triggers, and the Awakened tier with 1 extra expanding symbol is your best chance at cracking the 10,000x potential.
