Kingdom of Gold: Mystic Ways Review

While High 5 Games have fumbled around with their Way Out Wins mechanic for a while, Fox Fire was the first game that truly took it a step further. Now, with the release of Kingdom of Gold: Mystic Ways, the Megaways-inspired mechanic has been fully “cast in stone”, so to speak. The moving stone tablet blockers feel a lot more tangible than what was going on in Fox Fire, and the potential of 1 million win ways is way above most Megaways slots.

The honorable exception is 1 Million Megaways BC, but another thing that makes Mystic Ways stand out is the fact that the expanded reels will reset gradually per spin. The added wilds can lead to significant base game wins, and the bonus round can be quite generous when you finally manage to trigger it. Overall, this feels like a mature release from High 5 Games, and we certainly had a very good time testing this game (see highlights video further down in the review).

The Way Out Ways feature is central to all aspects of the gameplay, so it’s only natural that we start by detailing how this mechanic works. You start out with 4 rows on each of the 6 reels, but landing special arrow symbols with a number attached will change that neat little setup very quickly.

Each arrow symbol lands with the numbers 1, 2 or 3, and it will point either upwards or downwards. This marks the same number of symbol position blockers in either direction, and these blockers are then removed on the subsequent spin. You can land both an up-arrow and a down-arrow on the same reel at the same time.

If you manage to open up all 6 symbol positions on all 6 of the reels on the same spin, you will be playing with 1 million win ways. Each time 3 symbol positions are opened up fully either upwards or downwards, you are rewarded with a wild symbol. The wilds will manifest on reels 2 to 5 only, and only in certain default symbol positions.

In the base game, the symbol blockers will reset 1 step per spin, but this is not the case in the bonus round. You need 3 blue gemstone bonus symbols anywhere on reels 2 to 5 to trigger the free spins. However, a special symbol spelling “bonus” can overlap on wilds to make them also serve as a bonus scatter.

You will be granted 18 free spins for 3 scatters, while 4 scatters gives you 25 spins.

As in the base game, you will expand the reel set by landing arrow symbols. The big difference is that the symbol positions don’t reset during the bonus round. What’s more, any wilds awarded will also become sticky for the duration of the feature.

You will also get 2 or 3 extra spins when you land 3 or 4 scatters, respectively. The feature ends when you run out of free spins, and you can get up to 100 spins per session at the most.

This is one of those games that might sound a bit complicated when you read about them, and even the first time you see it all play out. Review Summary

High 5 Games has flirted with the reel expansion mechanic before, and most notably earlier this year with Fox Fire. Kingdom of Gold: Mystic Ways feels like a more solid release however, but this might also be because of the familiarity of the theme. The Way Out Ways feature certainly adds unpredictability to each spin here, and the wilds you get from fully removing blockers can be quite helpful.

As usual, it all comes to a head in the bonus round, where you benefit from non-resetting symbol blockers and sticky wilds.

The number of spins you get is also quite generous here, but it might take you a while to trigger the free spins. This is how it works with highly volatile slots usually, but the 10,205x potential is right up there with the Megaways engine titles this game is clearly inspired by.
