Muerto En Mictlan Review

‘Things to do in Mictlan when you’re dead’ could have been the title, but Play’n Go went with Muerto En Mictlan (which translates to ‘Dead in Mictlan’). The visually pleasing festive game is inspired by the Aztec version of the Day of the Dead festival, which, as far as we can tell, looks pretty similar to the mainstream version. The base game awards random win multipliers up to x4, and that’s pretty much it.

This means that payouts up to 1,200x can be landed from a base game spin, which is a far cry from the 10,000x potential. You will need the upgraded bonus round multipliers to do serious damage in other words, and the feature comes with 4 tiers where you get to pick 1 unique feature wild per level-up. The multiplier range gets better per level, and this is an overall decent installment in the Día de Muertos genre.

Muerto En Mictlan Features

The animated skull Wild not only substitutes for all regular pay symbols, it’s also the highest value symbol in the game. It pays only for 5-oak though, and this awards 30x your stake. The 4 premium symbols pay between 5 and 25 x your stake for the same in comparison, and different wilds play a central part in the bonus round we’ll cover below.

A win multiplier feature can trigger at random times, and a random multiplier value of x1, x2 or x4 is chosen in the base game.

The multiplier range is upgraded if you level-up in the bonus round, and you get x2, x4 and x6 in level 2. Level 3 comes with x3, x6 and x10 multipliers, while level 4 comes with a multiplier range of x4, x10 or x30.

The pinkish swirling ghost Scatters overlay regular symbols, meaning that they don’t block regular payouts, and you need 3 anywhere in view to trigger the Level 1 Bonus Round. This awards 5 free spins, and you get to choose 1 of 4 wild types to bring with you into the Mictlan Free Spins feature:

  • Sticky Wilds - remain frozen in place for the duration of the active bonus round level.
  • Expanding Wilds - expand to become full wild reels when they land.
  • Exploding Wilds - increase to 2x2 in size whenever they land.
  • Walking Wilds - move one step to the left per spin, before falling off reel 1.

Whatever Wild Feature you bring with you will become unavailable if you manage to upgrade to the next Free Spins level. Each level-up awards 5 free spins and a feature wild pick, and you need to collect 5 scatters in total to reach level 2. This includes the triggering scatters, and 11 and 18 scatters collected in total takes you to level 3 and 4, respectively.

You always get to complete each bonus round level, even if enough scatters is collected to level up, and scatters don’t land in level 4.

You can win up to 20 free spins in total if you manage to go all the way to level 4, and only 2 feature wilds are randomly selected for you to pick from per level.

The 200 Spins Muerto En Mictlan Experience

We landed mostly dead spins for a good while, with a couple of smaller wins here and there. You can safely skip to 1:16, when we trigger the bonus round, as there isn’t really all that much to see before that. We went with Expanding Wilds in level 1, and you can see how we fared by hitting the play button below.

Review Summary

While most people have heard about the Día de los Muertos (not least because of online slots), the Aztec afterlife realm, Mictlan, is far less known. This interesting twist is somewhat “lost in translation” though, as most will probably see this as another Day of the Dead installment. Either way, Muerto En Mictlan comes with a somewhat engaging festive audiovisual presentation, although the base game can be a bit dry.

The occasional random multiplier boost can help with top-up wins, but things definitely heat up when you get to choose your preferred feature wild in the bonus round. Getting only 5 spins can be brutal at times, but it’s fun when you manage to climb the tiers with new feature wilds per level. The 10,000x potential is solid, but 300x is the most you can hope for per spin without any multiplier action.

Pros

  • Random base game multiplier up to x4
  • 4-tier bonus round w/ choice of feature wild
  • Random multiplier range increases per FS tier
  • Win up to 10,000x your stake

Cons

  • Non-multiplier single spin max win is 300x
  • Beware of adjustable RTP ranges

Day of Dead - is a Pragmatic Play release with a similar theme, and it comes with 5x4 reels and 20 paylines. Tombstone wilds trigger the fully expanded walking wild respins feature, and extra walking wilds are collected in escrow in the indefinite bonus round.

This can lead to payouts up to 4,500x your stake.

Esqueleto Explosivo 2 - is Thunderkick’s follow-up to their highly popular original, and you get singing skeletons also here. Grim Muerto - is an earlier Play’n Go release in the same morbid festival genre, featuring a Mexican Mariachi band. The bonus round comes with unlimited free spins, and highlighted reels will duplicate wilds that land to cover the full reel. Up to 5 wild reels are possible this way in the bonus round, and you can win up to 2,500x your stake.
